Aeon Flux **

Don't believe the hype. I went to see Aeon Flux last night, which opened nationwide on Friday, and it was not as bad some have reported. It's based on the mid-90's animated series developed by Peter Chung that aired on MTV's Liquid Television. The film version retains the clinical yet sexy vision of the future imagined by Chung. It was encouraging to see that the trippier visual elements of the original series were kept in, perhaps at the expense of mass appeal. But then this is a project that really only could have hoped to have cult appeal based on the source material.

The one aspect lost in translation is the camp sense of humor that the original series possessed which offset the kinkier side of Aeon's character. Decent special effects and supporting players. If you're not familiar with the series, you may have to just accept some aspects at face value. Overall, the story is interesting and sci-fi fans should not be disappointed nor overly surprised by the conclusion. Fanboys are sure to enjoy drooling over Charlize Theron's "Flux". Worth a rental.
